Protecting Your Daughter's Health

Is your daughter aged between 9 and 26?

Has she been vaccinated against Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 35. It effects the cervix and the neck of the womb, leading to the death of 1000 women every year in the UK and a further 2,800 new cases are registered. 70% of cervical cancer cases are caused by The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

HPV is an extremely common virus; in fact, 70% (4 out of 5) people in the world will contract the virus at some point in their lives without knowing. There are over 100 identified strains of HPV and different strains affect different parts of the body. Around 40 of these strains are called high-risk HPV types affecting the genital areas of men and women causing cervical cancer. The rest of the strains are called low-risk HPV types and cause 90% of genital wart cases. The virus is passed on through sexual contact, not just sexual intercourse.

The HPV vaccination jab was introduced in 2008 and protects against 4 types of the HPV virus, two of which are the leading cause of cervical cancer and the other two the main cause of genital warts. The HPV vaccination is given in a course of 3 injections and is most effective in girls/young females between the ages of 9 and 26, as most women who have HPV were exposed to it in their teens and early 20’s.

The NHS is currently rolling a vaccination process, however due to limited funding they are only able to vaccinate girls of 14 years of age.  At Southdowns Private Health Care, based in Emsworth, in easy reach of Portsmouth, Havant, Chichester and Fareham we vaccinate children from the age of 9 upwards.  We offer appointments at a time to suit your family’s needs.

Prevention is the best cure and we believe that the HPV vaccine is crucial to help save lives.
