Drug resistant Gonorrhoea on the Rise, CDC claims

The number of treatment-resistant infections to the once curable disease, gonorrhoea, are on the rise according to the new guidance from the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Gonorrhoea is an extremely common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the passing on of the Neisseria Gonorrhoea Bacterium. Although symptoms may not always be obvious, left untreated the disease can cause permanent and serious health problems for those infected; including infertility, and even an increase in a person’s risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS.
Although most cases of gonorrhoea can be cured, successful treatment of the infection is becoming more difficult. According to the CDC, the bacterium that causes the disease has undergone genetic mutations over time, increasing the bacteria’s resistance to penicillin and therefore making it harder to treat.
Fortunately, the majority of gonorrhoea related infections are still treatable, and early detection is crucial to preventing the risk of infertility and other serious health problems.
